Autumn, March to May: the real planting season
Autumn is the most important season in a Cape garden, and the one people underuse. The soil is still warm from summer but the killing heat has passed and the rains are coming, so anything planted now settles its roots in ideal conditions. Winter, June to August: prune and hold back
This is our wet season, so the biggest watering mistake is leaving an irrigation system running out of habit. Turn it down or off. Winter is pruning season for dormant plants: roses and deciduous fruit trees are cut back in July, which sets up a strong spring flush.

Spring, September to November: feed and prepare
Growth takes off. Feed lawns and beds, top up mulch everywhere before the dry season lands, and give hedges their first shaping. This is the moment to service and test your irrigation before you actually depend on it, rather than in the first heatwave. Plant summer colour once the frost risk has passed, which in the higher, colder spots like Franschhoek runs a little later.
Summer, December to February: protect what you have
Summer is about keeping things alive, not starting new projects. Water deeply in the pre-dawn hours rather than lightly every evening, mulch everything, and mow the lawn a notch higher so it shades its own roots. Watch for pests and heat stress, and hold major planting until autumn.
The timing mistakes that cost the most
Planting a new lawn in spring or summer instead of autumn, pruning roses in the wrong month and losing a year of flowering, running irrigation through a wet winter and drowning roots, and forgetting to service irrigation until the first heatwave when everything is already stressed.
